A PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is a hybrid powertrain system that combines an internal combustion engine (ICE) with one or more electric traction motors and a high-voltage battery that can be externally charged from the grid.
This architecture allows for all-electric driving over a defined range, producing zero tailpipe emissions during electric operation. Once the battery’s state of charge falls below a predefined threshold, the ICE activates, either alone or in combination with the electric motor(s), to provide propulsion, extend the vehicle’s overall range, and optimize energy efficiency.
PHEVs offer a flexible balance between electric mobility for short trips and the extended range and convenience of traditional combustion power for longer journeys, making them particularly suitable for mixed urban and regional driving patterns.
