As the UK accelerates its transition to electric heavy-duty vehicles, fleet operators are seeking charging solutions that are not only fast, but smart, scalable and space-efficient. At Chargepoly, we’ve developed a Distributed DC architecture specifically designed to meet the needs of electric truck and coach depots.

Unlike conventional DC systems, our approach brings tangible benefits in performance, reliability and operational flexibility. Let’s explore what makes it different and why it matters for your fleet.

Conventional DC charging: an outdated model?

In a traditional DC setup, each charger is a self-contained unit with its own built-in power conversion modules. While this model is widely used, it comes with significant limitations for commercial use:

  • Bulky, noisy chargers: Housing power electronics inside each terminal increases the physical footprint and noise levels.

  • Wasted space: Fewer charging bays can be installed within a given area, making land use inefficient.

  • Underutilised energy: When a charger isn’t in use, the power allocated to it sits idle, contributing to energy waste and inefficiency.

This standalone approach may be acceptable for low-throughput public charging, but it quickly becomes inadequate when managing a high-volume commercial depot.

Distributed DC: a smarter, more flexible architecture

Distributed DC architecture separates power conversion from the satellite charging points. Instead of each charger managing its own energy conversion, centralised power cabinets feed multiple compact satellites via charging lines. This delivers key advantages:

  • Slimline, silent design: With no converters inside, our satellites are smaller and quieter, ideal for dense urban or depot environments.

  • Better use of available space: You can fit more chargers in the same area, preserving valuable parking or manoeuvring space.

Intelligent power allocation: Power is dynamically distributed based on real-time demand, ensuring maximum usage of your available grid connection.

Why it matters for UK fleet operators?

At Chargepoly, our proprietary Distributed DC system has been engineered with fleet electrification in mind. Here’s what it delivers:

Scalability

Need to add charging points as your electric fleet grows? Our modular setup makes it easy, no costly overhauls required.

Operational continuity

Thanks to multiple charging lines and distributed logic, our systems are resilient to single-point failures. That means fewer disruptions and greater reliability for logistics and passenger operations.

Energy efficiency

Because power is intelligently pooled and shared, energy use is optimised. That reduces both grid strain and electricity bills.

Looking ahead: the future of depot charging

In the context of UK-specific challenges, including space constraints, ambitious net zero targets, and rising electricity costs, Distributed DC charging is a future-proof solution. It ensures that infrastructure investments today remain relevant and cost-effective tomorrow.
