Maximum Called Power (MCP)

Maximum Power Demand (MPD) is the highest level of electrical power recorded at a site during a given period, measured in kilowatts (kW) or megawatts (MW). It is determined as the greater of the actual power consumed or a percentage of apparent power, depending on the electricity tariff.

In North America, MPD is a critical component of commercial and industrial electricity billing, as it reflects the peak load utilities must provide. For Electric Vehicle charging infrastructure and fleet operations, monitoring MPD is essential to optimise charging schedules, reduce costs, and prevent high peak charges. Effective MPD management also helps ensure grid stability and supports the adoption of sustainable, efficient electric mobility solutions.

In Quebec specifically, MPD is calculated according to Hydro-Québec rates, typically using 90% of apparent power for residential and small-to-medium power rates, and 95% for high-power commercial rates.
